Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is considered to be an enabling technology for the next generational leap in mobile communications. Similar concepts of utilizing a large surface of which the reflection angle can be artificially varied for improving both the spectrum and energy efficiency may go by other names, such as large intelligent surface, programmable metasurface or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Recently, the Industry Specification Group by the European Standards Organisation ETSI has agreed on the name RIS.
