PIER Photonics

Vision & Scope

Evolution & Vision

A Legacy of Growth. For over a decade, The Electromagnetics Academy has significantly strengthened the photonics track within PIERS (PhotonIcs and Electromagnetics Research Symposium). Today, each annual symposium attracts over 1,000 registered participants, with photonics emerging as the largest and most dynamic activity within the conference series.

A Dedicated Platform. While the Academy publishes the prestigious PIER (Progress In Electromagnetics Research) journal (Impact Factor: 9.3), there has not yet been a dedicated home exclusively for the rapidly evolving field of photonics. PIER Photonics was established to fill this gap, providing a premier open-access forum for transformative research at the intersection of light science and technology.

Bold Ambitions. Our vision is to build a top-tier journal that defines paradigms and drives fields forward. By synergizing with the massive community and the influential "hot-topic" mini-plenary talks of the PIERS conferences, the journal offers authors unparalleled reach, rapid impact, and global visibility.

Aims & Scope

PIER Photonics is an international, premier open-access journal dedicated to publishing transformative research at the forefront of light science and technology. Our mission is to advance photonics as the foundational discipline enabling next-generation solutions in information technology, health, sustainability, and fundamental science. The journal provides a unified, high-impact platform for work that bridges fundamental discovery, technological innovation, and interdisciplinary application. PIER Photonics has a focus on several dynamic and strategic domains where photonics is driving paradigm shifts:

  • Fundamental Science: Exploring novel light-matter interactions, quantum and nonlinear phenomena, and generating breakthrough tools.
  • Materials and Nanostructures: Engineering metasurfaces, 2D material platforms, and novel photonic materials for unprecedented control of light.
  • Integrated Photonic Systems: Advanced silicon photonics and hybrid integration for chip-scale systems in communications, computing, and sensing, including emerging applications such as hyperspectral imaging chips (on-chip spectrometers), LiDAR, and intelligent photonic processors.
  • Healthcare and Life Sciences: Harnessing light for breakthroughs in bio-imaging, biosensing, diagnostics, and therapeutics.
  • Sustainability and Information Technology: Developing efficient light sources, photonic solutions for energy, and next-generation technologies for optical interconnects, computing, and displays.
  • Emerging Frontiers: Dedicated to other visionary work that defines the next paradigms of photonics.

We seek original research, authoritative reviews, and forward-looking perspectives that demonstrate scientific rigor, high novelty, and clear potential for broad impact. By connecting deep physical insight with engineering application across these strategic domains, PIER Photonics aims to be the essential forum for research that will shape the future of photonics and its role in society.

Submission Guidelines

A submission to PIER Photonics is expected to represent a significant advance with broad implications for the field. Authors are required to provide a concise, compelling argument for why their manuscript meets this high threshold:

  • For Review Articles: Explain why this review is poised to become a definitive reference, how it will shape future research directions, and why it is expected to gain significant recognition.
  • For Original Research: Articulate why the work is groundbreaking. Explain the novelty, the critical challenges it overcomes, and its broad appeal to the photonics community beyond its immediate subfield.

This statement is critical for the initial editorial screening and will be shared with potential reviewers to provide context for the work's significance.
