Abstract
This study proposes an input-output waveform-synthesis method for high-efficiency power amplifiers (PAs) operating at multiple power levels. A power-dependent complex input-nonlinearity factor captures gate-voltage distortion caused by the nonlinear gate-source capacitance, linking input second-harmonic impedance to conduction interval and drain-current harmonics. The theoretical high-efficiency load-impedance regions are derived from the prescribed waveforms at selected input-power levels within 27-30 dBm. Their intersection defines common impedance targets for synthesizing a fixed harmonic-control network. To validate the proposed method, this work designs and fabricates a hybrid continuous mode (HCM) power amplifier centered at 3.5 GHz. Under continuous-wave (CW) excitation at 3.5 GHz, the power amplifier achieves a drain efficiency (DE) of 78.2%, a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 72.2%, an output power of 40.1 dBm, and a gain of 11.1 dB. Over 3.35-3.65 GHz, the measured DE ranges from 68.8% to 78.2%.
