Mutual-Coupling-Aware Optimization of Antenna Element Positions for Electromagnetic Field Focusing

Abstract
This study investigates the optimization of a linear antenna array for maximizing the electric-field amplitude at a prescribed receiving point while accounting for mutual coupling between array elements. Mutual coupling is characterized by transmission coefficients between radiators and incorporated into the calculation of the resulting electric field distribution. The analysis shows that coupling between array elements modifies the field distribution and reduces the electric-field amplitude in the intended antinode region. To mitigate this effect, we propose an optimization approach in which the radiator positions are adjusted to reduce mutual coupling while maintaining a physically feasible array configuration. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine the optimized radiator coordinates, with constraint functions introduced to satisfy the geometrical and physical requirements of the antenna system. The proposed formulation is not limited to genetic algorithms and can be applied with other optimization methods. The results demonstrate that the optimized radiator arrangement reduces mutual coupling and increases the electric field amplitude at the prescribed receiving point compared with the initial array configuration. Theoretical predictions are supported by mathematical modeling and validated by full-wave electromagnetic simulations in CST Studio Suite.
