A Supersymmetry-Based Method for Selective Higher-Order Mode Suppression in Metasurface Antenna Arrays

Abstract
Mutual coupling in metasurface antennas (MAs) can excite higher-order modes (HOMs), causing beam splitting and degraded boresight radiation. We develop a quantitative supersymmetry (SUSY)-based framework for selectively controlling modes in a 3 × 3 MA array of rectangular patches. Characteristic mode analysis identifies the detrimental modes, and a discrete Hamiltonian describes the primary array. SUSY transformations yield three superpartner Hamiltonians, from which we design lossy superpartner subarrays to reproduce the HOM spectrum while excluding the fundamental mode (FM). Grounded resistors introduce ohmic loss and provide additional dissipative channels for the spectrally matched HOMs. The unpaired FM remains relatively isolated. Control studies with matched, detuned, and matched unloaded configurations distinguish the roles of spectral correspondence, spatial coupling, and dissipation. The matched unloaded control shows that coupling to spectrally matched superpartner states already yields substantial broadside recovery, while resistive loading provides further improvement. With 1 MΩ loading, the ratio of the aggregate HOM modal weight to the FM modal weight is reduced by 24.63 dB at 9.8 GHz relative to the isolated primary MA. Experimentally, the 1 MΩ configuration achieves an 8.14 dBi boresight realized gain, corresponding to an 11.56 dB enhancement, without modifying the primary array geometry or feed.
